Govinda Threatens Rs 100 Crore Action Over Divorce Rumours
Veteran actor Govinda has fired a formal warning shot at sections of the media and the internet, issuing a public notice that threatens legal claims worth up to Rs 100 crores over what he calls false reporting on his personal life.
What triggered the notice
The move follows weeks of speculation around his marriage with Sunita Ahuja. After she was seen visiting a Mumbai family court, several outlets reported that she had withdrawn her divorce petition against him. Days later, fresh claims began circulating alleging that Govinda had quietly married actress Rani Swarnkar in a court ceremony. Both narratives have been described as untrue.
According to the notice issued on his behalf, the actor has cautioned the public, media organisations, digital platforms and individual creators against creating, publishing, uploading or sharing any material concerning him or his family that is false, defamatory, malicious or unverified.
Deepfakes firmly under the scanner
The notice pays special attention to manipulated media. It reportedly covers morphed photographs, doctored videos and audio recordings, deepfakes and AI-generated content. Govinda has made clear that no permission exists for anyone to recreate his voice, photographs, identity or likeness through artificial intelligence or similar tools, particularly where his private or family life is involved.
He has also hinted at design behind the flood of stories, pointing to past experiences and suggesting there may be a deliberate campaign aimed at damaging his public standing.
On the legal side, the notice invokes provisions relating to defamation, privacy violations, misuse of identity and cybercrime, including those under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000. Beyond civil damages of up to Rs 100 crores, it flags possible steps concerning bank accounts, restrictions on property transactions and seizure of passports, subject to applicable law.
YouTube channels and social media accounts found pushing misleading content about the actor and his family have specifically been warned to stop, with proceedings possible against those who continue regardless.
The development caps a turbulent stretch for the star, whose family matters have dominated entertainment headlines in recent weeks. With the notice now out in the open, he appears determined to draw a firm boundary between routine coverage and what he considers unauthorised, harmful content. Whether the threat quiets the rumour mill is another matter entirely.
