Punjab on Heavy Rain Alert Aug 11-13: IMD Warns of Downpours, Showsers Across State
Chandigarh, August 11: Punjab is bracing for a fresh spell of heavy rain over the next three days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing weather warnings for the state for August 11, 12 and 13.
In its latest bulletin issued on August 10, the IMD has forecast “fairly widespread” rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on August 11 and 13, with isolated pockets likely to receive heavy downpours. The subdivision-wise warning for Punjab flags “heavy rain” as a risk on August 13, while light to moderate showers are expected across the state through the intervening period.
Areas lying along Punjab’s eastern border are likely to bear the brunt of the heavy spells, while the western and southern parts of the state are expected to receive relatively lighter rain, according to the forecast.
The Met Centre in Chandigarh has separately issued a rain alert for 13 districts of Punjab, including Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Fatehgarh Sahib, SAS Nagar (Mohali) and Rupnagar, forecasting light to moderate rainfall, with thundershowers likely in isolated areas.
Officials attribute the wet spell to multiple weather systems converging over the region — an active monsoon trough over northern India, a western disturbance influencing weather patterns, and a low-pressure circulation over Uttar Pradesh and Haryana that has injected additional moisture into the atmosphere.
The state has been witnessing cloudy and rainy conditions since Tuesday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat and humidity. The maximum temperature across Punjab has dropped, with Gurdaspur recording the day’s highest at 35.8°C, while Chandigarh settled at 31.5°C — two degrees below normal.
Earlier, between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Monday, rainfall was recorded in five districts of the state, with Amritsar receiving the heaviest of 53 mm.
Despite the wet spell, Punjab’s monsoon remains in deficit. Rainfall in the state for August so far is 33 per cent below normal, and the seasonal (June 1 onward) shortfall stands at 32 per cent. Only two districts — Muktsar and Patiala — have received above-normal August rains, with shortfalls in other districts ranging up to 83 per cent. In contrast, neighbouring Haryana has recorded a 59 per cent surplus for August.
The IMD has advised residents in the affected areas to remain cautious during the heavy spells, avoid low-lying and waterlogged zones, and keep track of district-level warnings. The ongoing wet spell is expected to keep temperatures in check and provide further relief from humid conditions across Punjab and Chandigarh over the coming days.
