Gold Prices Climb Through Early August

Gold has been on a strong upward run in Punjab during the first ten days of August. According to the daily trend data, 24-carat gold opened the month at Rs 1,44,370 per 10 grams on 1 August, dipped to a month-low of Rs 1,44,140 on 5 August, and then surged to touch Rs 1,52,550 per 10 grams on 9 August — the highest level so far this month. The rally added Rs 8,170 per 10 grams between 1 and 10 August, and prices have hovered around the Rs 1.52 lakh mark since.

22-carat gold has moved in tandem, climbing from Rs 1,32,250 per 10 grams on 1 August to around Rs 1,39,840 by 11 August, a gain of more than Rs 7,500 per 10 grams in ten days.

Why Gold Prices Are Rising

Market watchers attribute the rally to a mix of global and domestic factors. Safe-haven demand has remained firm amid global economic uncertainty, while domestic gold imports have picked up and the central bank has continued to expand its gold reserves, according to a report by jeweller Candere’s rate tracker. Both institutional and household demand for the yellow metal has stayed elevated through the month.

Looking ahead, buying activity is expected to pick up further as the festive and wedding season approaches. In Punjab, gold demand is traditionally strong in rural markets and during Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya and the winter wedding months, with jewellery remaining the primary route of purchase.

22 Carat vs 24 Carat: What You Should Buy

Understanding the purity difference helps buyers decide. 24-carat gold is 99.9 per cent pure and is preferred for investment — coins, bars and digital gold — while 22-carat gold, which contains 91.6 per cent gold alloyed with other metals for strength, is the usual choice for jewellery in Punjab. Jewellers add making charges on top of the base rate for 22-carat ornaments, and a 3 per cent GST applies to the final bill.

While comparing rates, buyers should keep in mind that different trackers may quote marginally different figures on the same day because they average rates across different jewellers. As a rule, buyers should compare at least two or three local jewellers, check for BIS hallmark certification on jewellery, and confirm whether making charges and GST are included before finalising a purchase.

Gold rates are indicative and update through the trading day based on international prices and the rupee’s movement. For the latest daily movement, readers can check the commodity section for city-wise updates.
