Objections Raised Over Denial of One-Month Parole to MP Amritpal Singh
Amritsar, September 30, 2025 — A storm of criticism has erupted after the government declined to grant a one-month parole to Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam. The decision has drawn sharp rebuke from leaders of the Akali Dal and activists, who say the denial undermines democratic principle and hurts constituency interests.
At a press conference held today, senior party figures including Bapu Tarsem Singh, Paramjeet Singh Johal, Harbhajan Singh Tur, Shamsher Singh Padhri, Amarjeet Singh Van Chiri, Sukhdev Singh Kadian, Amandeep Singh, Daya Singh, Pargat Singh, and Jaswinder Singh called out both the Punjab and Central governments for ignoring repeated appeals.
Bapu Tarsem Singh told reporters that on September 3, a letter had been sent to the Union Home Minister via the Deputy Commissioner, urging that at least one month’s parole be granted to Amritpal Singh so he could return to his parliamentary constituency and assist flood-affected people using his discretionary fund. The letter reportedly cited his deteriorating health and the urgent need to reach out to constituents in distress.
“Refusing this request not only deprives a sitting MP of the basic rights associated with his post,” Bapu Tarsem Singh said, “but also raises serious questions about whether elected representatives are being silenced by arbitrary state action. If the rights of MPs can be crushed, then what about the rights of ordinary citizens?”
The leaders accused the governments of dismissing the appeal on “baseless grounds,” and issued a stern warning that further legal and political steps would follow if the parole request was not reconsidered.
